Sterran, or the Old Burlap as he was known throughout the valley of Gen, was a wrinkled old storyteller who spend his time wandering throughout the vale and spreading his stories of times long past. Everyone seemed to know him and he seemed to know everyone wherever he went. As far as anyone in the valley knew he was the oldest of the vale folk. Nobody could remember a time when the Burlap wasn’t around. It was said that Burlap had a family somewhere down in the southern end of the valley. In the last several years he was almost always seen in the company of his oldest grand daughter, Esmerelda. They wandered from village to village like a travelling road show. Sterran, telling his stories and Esmerelda singing or putting on one woman plays about ancient kingdoms. The were an odd pair to be sure, but people stopped to watch whenever they appeared.
Sterran’s wanderings were really just an excuse for keeping an eye on the goings on around the valley. What none of the locals knew, was that Sterran was actually an ancient and immensely powerful mage who had appointed himself the guardian of the valley. How he came to take on this role is for another time, but he had spent hundreds of years, carefully spreading rumors about the everpresent cloud layer that covered the valley. His motivation was to deter anyone from leaving the valley to discover the truth of what lay beyond. In his way, he was protecting the people from an incredibly dangerous world. He kept them safe and hidden away from the power of the dragonborn empire that ruled the world beyond the mountains.
